First of all, congratulations on your new home! It’s an exciting and stressful time and it’s a great feeling to sign those documents and complete the process.
You’re not quite done yet though, there are a few things you should do to ensure a smooth transition into your new home. Here are some of the most important things to keep in mind:
-
Change the locks and update any smart security systems (For example Ring doorbells, pool software, cameras, smart sprinkler system).
-
Clean the house and consider painting.
-
Set up utilities: (electricity, gas, water, and internet/cable.).
-
Familiarize yourself with the home: (Locate the main water shut-off valve, the electrical panel, and the HVAC system.)
-
Check the safety (windows are locked, replace batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, fire extinguishers and consider an emergency kit)
-
Change your address: Notify the post office, your bank, credit card companies, and any other important parties of your new address.
-
Get new keys for the mailbox and community amenities
-
Update your insurance: If you didn’t move in right away or had a leaseback, update as needed.
-
Set up a maintenance schedule: (changing the air filters, cleaning gutters, and servicing the HVAC system, septic maintenance) We discussed in the podcast that there could be a good app for home maintenance. Here is a blog on some different ones to look into. https://www.newhomesource.com/learn/10-best-apps-managing-new-home/
-
Meet your neighbors.
-
Store documents in a safe place.
